Adv Rider Relay - Mass - 8/17/08-8/18/08 : I was involved in a relay for the motorcyclist enthusiast site, www.ADVRider.com. The short story is, a guy in NC bought a Pelican waterproof case, put a Beanie Baby Ostrich in it and named it "PUI" which stands for "posting under the influence." The mascot name eventually changed to "Pooey." The relay started in May and is done strictly on motorcycle. Since May, Pooey has made it to over 40 states including Alaska. Pooey was just up in the Maritimes (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island) over the last two weeks on a 1800 mile trek. He then made his way down from Maine to New Hampshire and on Sunday he was handed off to me in Newburyport. So on Sunday afternoon I took him on a tour of Cape Ann to see the sites. When I got home I went through the case, included with the logbook and Pooey, everything and anything you can imagine is in there. From a menu from Arizona with Possum on it to postcards, toys, foreign currency, maps, pens, beer coasters, and more. The outside of the case is covered with stickers from every corner of the country. Very cool.

Yesterday I handed him off to a rider at Fenway Park in Boston. Today he is touring Boston, the south shore and Cape Cod. Tomorrow he will be in Rhode Island. Once he makes it to the last state in the lower 48 (Tenn.) he is headed off to Hawaii and then off to Australia, New Zealand, India, Turkey and finally Scotland. The reason for it is mostly for fun but there is also a fund raising effort as well to benefit www.riders.org. It seems like a good charity. It was a fun thing to be involved with and a honor to be state coordinator for Massachusetts.

July 20th -22nd, 2007 - Burlington, VT : After it was all said and done, I visited four states (NY, VT, NH and MA), took two ferry rides, rode in torrential rain on the way up at on I-89, visited my alma mater, and visited historic Ft. Ticonderoga. So… 660 miles logged on the bike for the weekend, and still had plenty of time to camp, visit several pubs in downtown Burlington, VT, sampled some of the best beer I have ever had, and spend some quality time by the campfire with friends. All that and I got back in time Sunday to have an early evening dinner with my wonderful wife, Hilary. Next trip she is coming, we just got in all of her state of the art safety gear on Friday.

By the way, I had the left side of my BMW’s engine pulled apart only hours before I left on Thursday night to replace a bad timing chain tensioner. With my fingers crossed, (especially in the ultra-remote, no-cell-phone-service, one-car-passes-every-hour, more-cows-per-square-mile-than-humans sections of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom,) she ran like a top all weekend. It is especially gratifying to me for some reason to pull an engine completely apart, rendering the vehicle useless, reassemble it, start it and rely on it to take you to the Canadian border and back. Not sure why I get such a kick out of that, but it boosts the ego, not to mention the confidence boost, knowing that I could fix something in case something were to go wrong in East Bumble Vermont.
